From the dust jacket: 'The strong community ties of mining villages are the central concern of this book which deals with the social history and sociology of mining in County Durham in the twentieth century. Focusing on the County as a whole, it asks what is sociologically most distinctive about the area in the past and how it is changing in the present. The personal documents presented in the first chapters of the book bring to life the local mining community with an evocative picture of village life at the turn-of-the-century; a description of the work of Peter Lee, the county's most important political leader, and even a consideration of the social significance of leek growing and leek showing. These first-hand accounts are integrated with the results of social research carried out at Durham University over a number of years; four areas are looked at in detail. First there is a study of the general characteristics of mining villages and towns in County Durham and the question of why they are called 'communities'. This is followed by a look at the unique aspects of local politics in the area-- the County Council has been continuously controlled by the Labour Party for over fifty years. Town and village planning is examined from the point of view of the decline in mining, the creation of new towns and the controversial village categorization policy. Finally, the book discusses changes in mining employment and the question of ex-miners working in the new manufacturing industry.'. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 004122
