Lodewijk Houtakker Collectionin Amsterdam represents an intriguing history of drawings executed from the 16th to the 20th centuries. Most of the drawings are designs for or records of pure ornament, applied ornament, architectural detail, ephemeral constructions for spectacles, the theater and events. Over 1100 drawings by French and Italian artists form the major part of the collection, but a significant number of works from the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, England, Spain and Sweden are also represented. In his introduction Peter Fuhring investigates the gradual rise of interest in architectural and ornament drawing and examines the collection in the light of different techniques and styles illustrated. The catalogue is arranged by subject: drawings for ornament, for the decorative arts, for architecture, gardens and fountains, for the theater and events, for sculpture and machines, within each subject the designs are ordered chronologically by country. there are two indexes devoted to artists and to subject and motifs.
