CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Story of British Major-General Sir Hector Macdonald, KCB, DSO, ADC, LLD, "Fighting Mac", as he was known. As a crofter's son, he rose from the ranks and gained honors during his long military career. He distinguished himself in action at the Battle of Omdurman (1898), became a popular hero in Scotland and England, and was knighted for his service in the Second Boer War His career came to a shocking end in 1903 when he stood accused of homosexual activity and was ordered to face a courts-martial. Instead, he took his own life in a Paris hotel room. Here the author explores the life of this honored solder, as well as the political circumstances of Queen Victoria's little wars of Empire and the conditions of life in an infantry regiment of the British Army.
