Excerpt from A Key to Domesday, Showing the Method and Exactitude of Its Mensuration, and the Precise Meaning of Its More Usual Formulæ: The Subject Being Specially Exemplified by an Analysis and Digest of the Dorset Survey
When, in the days of K. Ethelred (979 the country was surveyed and sub-divided for the purposes of equal taxation, the hide was accepted as the basis of assessment. Then, too, we may be sure, the hidage of most counties, and of Dorset among the rest, was scrutinized and readjusted; then the lands were not measured indeed, still less remeasured, but were so divided and parcelled as to bring one hide into fair comparison with another. And here again the hide, virtually though not designedly, assumed still more the seeming of an areal measure.

This book explores the Domesday Book, commissioned by William the Conqueror in 1085, a vast and unique survey of England, and more specifically, the part of the survey known as the Dorset Domesday. Through this book, the author explores the themes and ideas of the Dorset Domesday including taxation, land-ownership and economics. By examining the terminology used in the document, and contrasting this with the terminology used in other county surveys, the author reveals previously unknown facts about the economy, population and culture of Dorset in the wake of the Norman Conquest.
