This book explores the Domesday Book, commissioned by William the Conqueror in 1085, a vast and unique survey of England, and more specifically, the part of the survey known as the Dorset Domesday. Through this book, the author explores the themes and ideas of the Dorset Domesday including taxation, land-ownership and economics. By examining the terminology used in the document, and contrasting this with the terminology used in other county surveys, the author reveals previously unknown facts about the economy, population and culture of Dorset in the wake of the Norman Conquest. Furthermore, the author sheds new light on the medieval systems of measurement.
