Excerpt from The Ciceronian: Or the Prussian Method of Teaching the Elements of the Latin Language
By the advice of the same gentlemen, a few simpler sentences from Cicero have been placed at the end of these notes, and before the other selections, fbr the hen efit of younger pupils.
An examination of the plan of instruction will show that a glossary, and complete body of notes, by way of commentary, to render the study easy, would, in a great measure, defeat the end proposed. The process of making out the meaning constitutes the most important part of the pupil's employment, as well as the bacher's. In languages, no less than in mathematics, those commen taries, which give to the student the result without the labor of the process, are ruinous to scholarship.

Recognizing the deficiencies of existing methods, the author reconstructs Latin instruction around a core of well-chosen classical passages, providing a solid foundation for future language acquisition. The work contends that rather than overwhelming students with fragmented rules and abstract grammar, they should immerse themselves in the language through the consistent study of these select passages. This approach cultivates a natural feel for Latin, enhancing both comprehension and proficiency. Through repeated exposure, students develop a deeper understanding of Latin's grammatical principles and acquire an extensive vocabulary, while honing their ability to perceive the language's nuances. The author acknowledges the importance of historical context in language study, recognizing Latin's enduring influence on Western thought and culture. The book emphasizes the rich thematic depth of Latin literature, exploring ideas of virtue, justice, and eloquence that transcend time. These insights illuminate the significance of Latin, not merely as a language to be studied, but as a window into the foundations of our collective human experience.
