In designing the Panton Chair, the first one-piece plastic cantilever chair, Panton produced one of the most famous chair designs of this century. Verner Panton (1926-1998), the Danish designer who made Switzerland his home, was much more than a master of sixties design. Even though he favoured extravagant designs and the use of strong vibrant colours, his work was unmistakably rooted in the elegant functionalism of the 1950s. This illustrated book contains a series of essays on the individual aspects of Panton's diverse work; from his chairs and sofas to lighting design, textile work, spectacular room designs and the exciting development of the Panton Chair.

This is a fine softcover copy with a very good die cut dust wrapper with just light wear: a little creasing to the top of the jacket spine, not affecting the book inside. This monograph was prepared to accompany the large scale retrospective exhibition at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil-Am-Rhein in 2000. Catalogue edited by Alexander von Vegesack. Exhibition curator Mathias Remmele. Verner Panton (1926- 1998) lived and worked in Basel, which was close to the Vitra Museum, and when Vitra was opened Panton transferred many objects and drawings and papers to the Vitra Museum archive. The curators at Vitra worked closely with the Panton Office and especially Marianne Panton to provide the most comprehensive showing of Panton's vast output, including textiles.
