“Collectors should regard participating in exhibitions as a mission. Doing so means making seldom or never seen works available to the public and thus playing an indispensable role in the sharing of knowledge.”
These are the noble and generous sentiments of David Nahmad, whose family has done so much since the early 1960s to safeguard our heritage by making the great history of painting and artists known to as many people as possible. Thus, over forty works from this illustrious collection, specially selected for the Bonnard Museum., are gathered here for this exhibition. The selection includes some of the greatest artists of the modern era, from the forerunners and masters of Impressionism (Boudin, Monet, Renoir, Sisley, Degas and Zandomeneghi) to Picasso and Matisse, by way of the Nabis Bonnard, Toulouse-Lautrec, the Fauves (Marquet and Dufy), the Cubists (Braque and Gris) and the School of Paris (Modigliani, Kisling and Pascin). The works cast light on the fascinating lines of descent between the schools of the different eras and the contribution of each of these painters to the history of art, whose exciting course is retraced in this lavishly illustrated and documented catalogue.
