Quarto, ten volumes, over 800 pages per volume with over 3250 illustrations and more than 560 tables plus 48 folding colour maps. Half morocco and cloth; spines gilt in compartments; all edges marbled, with marbled endpapers; covers a little rubbed; trifling signs of age and use; an excellent set with the contemporary name-plate of William Godley on each front pastedown. 'Special regard has been given to American and Colonial subjects. The more important articles on matters connected with America have been written in the United States by American authors expressly for this edition. In subjects where the American view or practice diverges from that of the United Kingdom, a special paragraph has been added from American sources' (from the preface). [10 items].
