Heavily water damaged. Fragile. Some leaves sticking together in latter third of book. The diary has the pages numbered up to page 108. The page numbering starts at 5, as the first two leaves are missing, and the early pages are also very damaged.There are diary entries written for nearly every day of the year. Each leaf is divided into three days, Thursday, Friday and Saturday one page and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday on the next page. There are no spaces for Sundays.The diary has thin leather covers stamped in gilt on the front cover "Campbell's Quarto Diary for 1874". Page dimensions: 255 x 197mm. The leather covers have separated from the thick paper which they are pasted down onto pasted on to though. The inside of the covers have some printed informatino e.g. Postage rates and Mean Time of High Water at Glasgow. This information on the inside of the covers has chips and abrasions however. Some extracts: Thursday, 22 January: . "Killed a sheep"; Tuesday, 22 February: "Took Tommy and Darky to get shod but the blacksmith was short of coals and I only got Darky shod. Turned Law's bull out of the swamp and took three of our own beasts out of Law's. " Thursday, 26 February: "Robert, Ben & Harry commenced to clean out the dam. " Tuesday, 10 February: "Father brought out from Dunedin, 1 Chestnut horse, 1 Grey pony, 1 Chestnut filly, & 1 Cream coloured mare with foal. " Friday, 27. February: "Had a ride on the Grey mare. Killed two sheep. " Saturday, 28 February: Took Maggy along to Waikouaiti". Friday, 17 April: "Robert in the garden. Harry ploughing. Ben carting stones for the culvert at and above the dam. Killed two sheep. " Saturday, 18 April: "Robert in the garden. Harry ploughing in the orchard in the forenoon and the flat in the afternoon. Ben carting stones for the culvert and cleaning out the dam. " Monday, 20 April: "Robert in the garden. Harry ploughing. Ben cleaning out the dam in the forenoon and went to the Smithy in the afternoon and brought home a load of gravel. Killed two sheep. A ewe lambed to day in Patarua. Downes tthatching Barley stack. " Tuesday, 21 April: "Robert at the bush for young trees in the forenoon and in the garden in the afternoon. Ben at the bush with Robert in the forenoon and clearing tussock in the afternoon.
