Beschreibung
Magnificent lithograph from John Gould's final work, The birds of New Guinea and the adjacent Papuan Islands, including many new species recently discovered in Australia. It was always Gould's intention that the Birds of New Guinea., was to be a continuation of his great work on the Birds of Australia, as he saw that the ornithology of Australia and New Guinea were linked, as well as the fact that many more new Australian species had been recently discovered after its his completion in 1869. Modern common name : Wilson's Bird of Paradise. Modern binomial name : Cicinnurus Respublica First described: Bonaparte, 1850 The scientific name of this species was given by Charles Lucien Bonaparte, Napoleon's nephew who described the bird from a damaged specimen purchased by British ornithologist Edward Wilson. In doing so, he beat John Cassin, who wanted to name the bird in honor of Wilson, by several months. Thirteen years later, in 1863, Heinrich Agathon Bernstein discovered the home grounds of the Wilson's Bird of Paradise in Waigeo Island. The Wilson's Bird of Paradise is found in the hill and lowland rainforests of Waigeo and Batanta Islands off West Papua. The male is a red and black, with a yellow mantle on its neck, light green mouth, rich blue feet and two curved violet tail feathers. The head is naked blue, with black double cross pattern on it. The blue bare skin on the crown of the bird's head is so vivid that it is clearly visible by night the deep scarlet back and velvet green breast are lush, the curlicue tail gleaming bright silver.
