Beschreibung
Second printing (the first was in November, 1924). Hardcover. Page edges just slightly toned, bookseller's label on the front fixed endpaper, with an ownership signature (dated 1939) on the corresponding free endpaper, otherwise very good in a good dustjacket (price intact on the spine) with some professionally closed tears and small restored chips/pieces (none affecting lettering or illustration). An early novel by this witty and humane novelist and travel book writer, a saga of shipwreck and survival, revolving around a philanthropic young Englishwoman and forty ophans abandoned on an island in 1855, and a visit to the island 70 years later by another group of related people. Macaulay is best known for her 1920 novel "Potterism", a satire on middle-class values of the time, and her later works, "The World My Wilderness", "The Towers of Trebizond" and the splendid travelogue/history "Pleasure of Ruins" (1953). This early copy of "Orphan Island" has an attractively illustrated jacket and is scarce thus. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 32425
