The Introduction begins: "The venereal disease, which, according to historians of the most undoubted credit, is a native of some of the American isalnds, especially Hispaniola, was brought into Spain near the end of the fifteenth Century, and thence carried into Naples [.]". "Some of the tribes of Indians, in the back parts of America, eat the serpents which they happen to kill in their hunting parties; such as the horned, the rattle, and the mukasoe snakes. [.] This curious circumstance I often had related to me by many of the sage farmers of North America, when I was in that part of the world; some of them of a very philosophic turn of mind: but it is very ingeniously related to me of late by a gentleman of strict honour and integrity, a native of North Carolina, who being a staunch loyalist, forsook an ample fortune in that country to support the royal cause. The following instance he has related to me among many. That he was once present, when a rattle sake, about three feet and half in length, had bit a horse as he was feeding in a meadow which had been mowed. The snake being observed by some workmen, was instantly surrounded by them, who, with long sticks, confined the animal to a small spot of ground in the same meadow. He several times attempted to direct his course to thick cover but care was taken to prevent him, till upwards o two hours was elapsed [.] " - pages 72-73. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
