The copy here offered in fine condition is signed by the author. Rare. NOTE: Joseph Pearson (1849-1939), draper, cyclist and map publisher, was born in Sydney. In 1882, Pearson visited England and Europe, and again later in 1893. On both visits he cycled extensively, using available road maps. Inspired by his experiences, he vowed to persuade his fellow Australian cyclists "to take an occasional tour in the country.to get into our wide spaces". In 1898, Pearson compiled and published "Handbook and Guide to the Roads of New South Wales", the most detailed guide ever published in Australia. This work formed the basis of a series of road maps and guides that subsequently followed and for which Pearson became renowned. Pearson published this account, here offered, as a reminiscence of the people, places, practical hints, and experiences of early cycling in Australia. (Australian Dictionary of Biography).
