Beschreibung
Large and impressive mezzotint of Prince William, Duke of Gloucester (1689-1700), who was the son of Princess Anne, later Queen of England, Ireland and Scotland from 1702, and her husband, Prince George, Duke of Cumberland. He was their only child to survive infancy. This mezzotint portrait is after a painting by Sir Godfrey Kneller. It15836 shows William as a child, half length in an oval, long hair, wearing neck cloth, coat, sash, and badge with star. It was issued in 1700, the year that the unfortunate young man died. Lettered with title, production details along bottom: 'G. Kneller Eques pinx: 1699.', 'I. Smith fec:', and 'Sold by I. Smith at ye Lyon & Crown in Russel-street Covent-Garden'. Chaloner Smith 113.II. The second state, with the framing around the oval portrait lighter than later states, but with the addition of 'Nat: 24 Denat: 30 [brackets] die Iulij [brackets] 1689. 1700.' below the title. "Gloucester's death, in 1700 at the age of eleven, precipitated a succession crisis as his mother was the only individual remaining in the Protestant line of succession established by the Bill of Rights 1689. The English Parliament did not want the throne to revert to a Catholic, and so passed the Act of Settlement 1701, which settled the throne of England on Electress Sophia of Hanover, a cousin of King James II, and her Protestant heirs." (Wikipedia). Oval portrait 11 5/8 x 9 1/2". Impression mark 13 5/8 x 9 7/8". Small but acceptable margins. Trimmed close to the impression line, a little even toning. A small rub and scratch in black ground of oval, a small closed nick in the upper right edge repaired archivally. The initial "G" of the artist faint otherwise a strong impression.
