Lawrence formed a publishing partnership in 1891, and in 1895 they published the first one-volume edition of The Unclassed. They split in 1900, but some copies of Bullen's 1901 edition of The Unclassed were bound with the coloured endpapers of the 1895 edition, and the names of both publishers on the spine. Coustillas surmises that this variant 'is likely to have been the earlier on the market as it seems to have consisted of copies of the 1895 edition still unsold at the time of the dissolution of the Lawrence & Bullen partnership'.
