This edition with a 2 page "Exordium" by the author dated 1889. Rear cover with advertisement for the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand. "Far away in the interior of Otago there are three great mountain ranges, radiating northerly from the Lammerlaw - mother of mountains." - the opening sentence. "In those halcyon days when I revelled in tightly-strapped trousers, a frequent addendum to the title of a novel or story was the legend 'Founded on Fact.' [. . .] The pictures of life and society in those early days are true; the scenic descriptions are true - minutely conned and noted at the time, when all was new and strange" - from the Exordium, p. iii. "Goldfields story set in Dunedin featuring George W. Pratt, the 'senior partner' and Willl Enderby alias Harry Grey. Pyke's narrative with its sectional 'flash-back; to Enderby's Victorian past (excellent for the Australian market) and the final denouement in Australia, makes a brisk, plausible and readable narrative" - Bagnall 4748 (for the first edition).
