L étude de ce navire repose sur une documentation historique de grande valeur. A cet effet, Bruno Orsel a étudié les sources documentaires et techniques de l époque largement développées par la revue « Le yacht de 1878 et des années suivantes », le célèbre traité de construction naval de Dixon Kemp « A Manual of Yacht and Boar Sailing » où l auteur offre une description très précise du gréement des clippers de Seine. Le Musée National de la Marine possède plusieurs modèles d époque de ces clippers. Leurs études permirent, là encore, d apporter une richesse de renseignements, en particulier sur leur mode de construction et de précieux détails de leur gréement. ************** Le développement du canotage et de la plaisance à Argenteuil, mais plus généralement autour de Paris, est intimement lié au bouleversement de la société de la deuxième moitié du 19e siècle. Dès 1850 on dispute les premières courses de bateaux à rames puis à voiles. Mais la plaisance de rivière reste encore constituée d un ensemble hétéroclite d engins divers. Doucement va se former une aristocratie et du simple canots à voiles, l ambition des premiers va grandir jusqu à construire de vrais bateaux à voiles qui, pour les plus passionnés, mais aussi les plus fortunés, seront de véritables bateaux courses, des pur-sang de la plaisance, alors en pleine évolution. Les clippers de la Seine sont nés dans ce contexte. Argenteuil, qui offre un plan d eau exceptionnel, devient le haut lieu de la régate parisienne. Mais avant cela l importation d Amérique de quelques spécimens naviguant dans la baie de New-York, comme « Margot » un sand- bagger, plus tard « New-York », un cat-boat, va bouleverser et remettre un question les principes de construction des bateaux de rivière. Ces dériveurs américains seront étudiés par les constructeurs pour être adaptés aux conditions de navigation en Seine. De là naîtront des bateaux plus audacieux, aux formes effilées, aux gréements plus élancés, des bateaux plus extrêmes qui prendront le nom de « clippers d Argenteuil ».
