Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair. 1st Edition. This is the 1940 First Edition of "Madrigals & Odes from Petrarch" (the great 14th century Italian poet) as translated by Helen Lee Peabody, with a Preface by Giuseppe Prezzolini. The book was published by Loker Raley in New York. While the dust-jacket, which is seldom accompanying the book, is somewhat rough in condition, it has done its duty, protecting the book from undue wear. Morris Bishop, who was Professor of Romance Languages at Cornell University, had this to say about this book : "It is very exciting to read a new translation of Petrarch. The translations seem to me in every way excellent. They can stand alone as poems, without the guarantee of Petrarch's words, printed on the facing pages. But for the reader who delights in poetry, it is a constant pleasure to look from the right-hand page to the left and back again, to savor at ease the great thoughts of Petrarch in the two great languages." Said Prof. Clarence Whittlesey Mendel of Yale University : " These sympathetic renderings of Petrarch are what every translator in verse would like to create ; they are interpretations of one age and race to another, but they are also distinguished poetry in their own right." And lastly, John Hall Wheelock (Harvard graduate, poet, senior editor at Scribner's) spoke thusly: " Helen Lee Peabody's charming translations from Petrarch are always skillful, and sometimes achieve that miracle of transmutation, which is the hope of every translator." Summary: Mi Fu, one of the most celebrated figures in the history of Chinese art, was a prominent calligrapher in eleventh-century China. A member of the educated elite, or literati, he also contributed a great deal to discussions of theoretical issues of function and style in calligraphy, the primary means of graphic expression for the literati. In this book Peter Sturman examines Mi Fu's calligraphy within the framework of the artist's fascinating life, the Northern Song culture in which he lived, and the literati theory of art he helped to formulate. The book is both chronological and topical, following Mi Fu's efforts to develop styles of calligraphy that would communicate his social and personal ideals as they changed according to his place in Song society: as connoisseur of the arts, responsible official, man among mountains and streams, and Daoist talent in the service of the emperor. Sturman's detailed analyses, which consider the content as well as the style of the writing, firmly set Mi Fu's calligraphy in the fabric of Northern Song history. At the same time, Sturman shows how Mi Fu's relationship with the history of calligraphy both before and after him illuminates this most Chinese of arts. 1 Kg. …
