Softcover. Zustand: Wie neu. 11x18 cm., Letras Hispánicas 480. Erste Auflage, 202pp., Rústica hilo, Sprache: Spanisch, Libro nuevo en sentido no leído. Cubiertas con leves señales de almacenamiento. Interiores en impecable estado. USADO / GEBRAUCHT / USED. In den WarenkorbZustand: Good. Mm. 265 x 180. Pp. 13.

FIRST COLLECTED EDITION of Sabellico's works and first edition of his twelve books of letters (occupying leaves a1v-l1v), which are a most important source for his biography. The Epistolae, dedicated to Marcantonio Morosini, are followed by Orationes, De situ Venetae urbis (a topographical description of the city of Venice as it was during the author's life), De Venetiis magistratibus, De praetoris officio, De reparatione Latinae linguae (considered the first historical and connected narrative of the Renaissance movement in Italy), De officio scribae (on the office of a government secretary), and De vetustate Aquileiae. The whole second part consists of his neo-Latin poetry, of which the poem De rerum et artium inventoribus, in which he enumerates the inventions of mankind and their inventors, is the most interesting (cf. R. Chavasse, ?De inventoribus rerum': Marcantonio Sabellico and Polydore Virgil, in: ?Polidoro Virgilio e la cultura umanistica europea?, R. Bacchielli, ed., Urbino, 2003, pp. 207-224).W.A. Copinger (Supplementum, London, 1895-1902, no. 5196) attributes the first part to a printer from Brescia around 1490. In fact there is some visible difference in the typographical material and woodcut initials between the two parts of the volume (cf. M. Sabellico, De latinae linguae reparatione, G. Bottari, ed., Messina, 1999, p. 72).Among Sabellico's correspondents were members of his family, especially his son Mario and his brother Catalucio da Coccio, and a wide range of personalities: fellow humanists, church dignitaries, political leaders and noblemen, e.g. Giovanni Stefano Emiliano, Pomponio Leto, Giovanni Antonio Flaminio, Ermolao Barbaro, Antonio, Benedetto and Tommaso Trevisan, Giorgio Merula, Angelo Sabino, Jacopo Filippo Foresti, Sebastiano Badoer, Leonardo Loredan, Palladio Negri, Giovanni Battista Cantalicio, Paolo Santonino, Pietro Barozzi, Angelo Poliziano, Antonio Bonfini, Gasparino Barzizza, Pietro and Paolo Marsi, Andrea Mocenigo, Carlo Barbavero, Agostino and Marco Barbarigo, Francesco Piccolomini, Girolamo Donà, Domenico Grimani, Lodovico Sforza, Ercole d'Este, Giovanni Bentivoglio, Lodovico Odasi, Antonio Bonfini, Guidobaldo da Montefeltro, Bernardo Bembo, Girolamo Squarzafico, Fabio and Giovanni Pontano, Coriolano Cippico, Antonio Corner, Antonio Moretto. One letter is addressed to a woman: the learned Cassandra Fedele. The collection also contains some letters addressed to him (e.g. Pomponio Leto). That his letters became models of an elegant style is shown nine years later after its first publication by a selection of letters entitled Breviores epistolae, ?for teaching the rudiments of the Latin language to adolescents', which were published at Leipzig in 1511 (two editions in that year, reprinted in 1513 and 1520). They could be classified by topics such as family, sons' education, editing and publishing, dedication and patronage, classical texts, Venetian life and ceremony. The letter at p. 52 is addressed to the poet and playwright Marco Armonio (1477-c. 1552), who in 1500 had written and staged in Venice a neo-Latin comedy entitled Stephanium, which was greeted with great enthusiasm. In the letter, Sabellico, who had the chance to read the comedy before it was published around 1503 and had attended first-hand its first staging, praises the work for the ?argumentum, dignitas personarum, sententiarum gravitas, verba. Book.

Originally compiled in the late 15th-century by Dominican inquisitors, the Malleus maleficarum (literally, the "hammer of witches") is perhaps the best known of the earliest treatises on witchcraft. The attribution of Sprenger as a co-author has been disputed. The first printed edition appeared in Strasbourg in 1486. "There can be no doubt that this work had in its day and for a full couple of centuries an enormous influence. The work was of course widely referred to throughout the European witch trials, and this particular edition was issued at a time when the witch-hunts in France, Germany, and Switzerland were still in full swing, and there is no doubt that copies of this printing helped seal the fate of many of the unfortunate accused. There are few demonologists and writers upon witchcraft who do not refer to its pages as an ultimate authority. It was continually quoted and appealed to in witch-trials" (Montague Summers). "It is universally considered as the greatest summa of printed demonological literature." (Mora, George (editor), Witches, Devils, and Doctors in the Renaissance, 1991, pp. 724-5). Norman Douglas described it as "the misogynists" handbook." Cf. Norman 1997; cf. Wellcome 6049. This edition was published in two volumes in 1600 and included not just the "Malleus Maleficarum" but also a collection of other significant demonological texts. The first volume [here offered for sale] comprises the "Malleus Maleficarum" itself, plus extracts from the "Formicarius" of Johannes Nider (originally the second book ever printed to discuss witchcraft). The second companion volume [which is here lacking] contains nine demonological treatises: Bernard Basin, "De artibus magicis ac magorum malificiis"; Ulrich Molitor, 'Dialogum de lamiis et pytonicis muliéribus"; Girolamo Menghi, "Flagellum Daemonum"; John Gerson, "De probatione Spirituum"; Thomas Murner, "De Pythonico contractu"; Foelicis Malleoli (Felix Hemmerlin) "Tractatus duos exorcismorum" & "De credulitate Daemonibus adhibenda"; Bartolomeo Spina, "De Strigibus feu Maleficis" & "Apologia quadruplici de Lamiis".

BIBLIOGRAPHICAL REFERENCES: Rare, not in Adams, USTC 696770 citing 32 copies with just 3 in the UK and 2 in the US. Sebonde's Theologia was a celebrated text in its day but is mainly known now through Montaigne's attention and his French translation of the work in 1569. Its prologue asserting the ability of human reason to understand the existence and attributes of God through observation of the natural world, was added to the Index Prohibitorum in 1559. A beautiful example of this rare text in an exceptionally fine binding.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First edition. Octavo (ca. 23,5x16,5 cm). With two title pages (in English and Farsi). 348 pp. (numbered in Eastern Arabic system). Text in Farsi. With numerous ink and pencil written commentaries in English, Arabic, and Farsi on verso of the title page and in text. Period brown full sheep with gil…t lettered title "Lees. Persian Series" on the front board and a gilt lettered title label on the spine; marbled endpapers, bookseller's paper label (Arthur Probsthain, Oriental Bookseller, London), in the left lower corner of the front pastedown endpaper. Binding slightly rubbed, paper slightly age toned, otherwise a very good copy. Very rare Indian imprint with only four paper copies found in Worldcat. Second unaltered edition was published under the same title in 1871. "The Iqd-I Gul" or "The Rose Necklace" is a collection of short stories, aphorisms and parables from the famous "Gulistan" by Sa'adi Shirazi and "Anwar-I Sohail" (or "The light of Canopus") by Ḥosayn Wāʿeẓ Kāšefī (b. 1502). "Gulistan" is Sa'adi's second major work after the "Bustan" ("Garden"). It consists of small stories of aphoristic character, with elegant intricate plots expressed in precise and exact lines. This "multi-layered" poem led to the creation of an Iranian saying: "Every line of Sa'adi has 72 meanings". Gulistan contains hidden context of Sufi character and is deeply connected with the teachings of as-Suhrawerdi. (b. 1155). "Anwar-I Sohail" is a book of fables, inspired by the classical Indian moral stories of "Kalila wa Dimna" and early Arabic works of Ibn al-Muqaffa' (724-760); it consists of fourteen chapters "commissioned by and dedicated to the Timurid amir Neẓām-al-Din Sheikh Aḥmad Sohayli, whose name is alluded to in the title" (Encyclopaedia Iranica online). The collection was assembled by the principal of the Calcutta Madrasa and a noted orientalist William Nassau Lees (1825-89). "He was for some years principal of the Madrásá or Mohammedan College, Calcutta (averaging four hundred students), in which institution he was also professor of law, logic, literature, and mathematics. He was likewise secretary to the college of Fort William, Persian translator to the government, and government examiner in Arabic, Persian, and Urdu for all branches of the service, besides being for some years part proprietor of the 'Times of India' newspaper, and was an incessant contributor to the daily press on all Indian topics, political, military, and economical. In 1857 the university of Dublin conferred on him the honorary degree of LL.D., and he was also a doctor in philosophy of Berlin. He became a member of the Royal Asiatic Society, London, in 1872". The "Iqd-I Gul" consists of several parts, titled "Dervish's Morals", "Padishah's Lessons" etc. Our copy is interspersed with period ink marginalia, apparently made by a student of the Calcutta Madrasa, among which are translations of specific words and expressions, remarks on the stories, dates when a particular story was read (mainly in 1875), et al.: "grazing fields of Paradise" (p. 114), "Bravo!" (p. 118), "Story of the Raven & the Serpent" (p. 205), "Story of the Hare and the Wolf" (p. 210), et al.

In den WarenkorbFolio (ca. 230 x 410 mm). French manuscript on a single leaf of vellum. A list of the 103 conseillers and 15 huissiers (ushers of justice) of the Parlement of Paris in the year 1463. The list in two columns begins with the first president, Mathieu de Nanterre (1461-65), and his three deputies Yves de Stepeaux, Robert de Thiboust…, and Jean de Boulenger, who would serve as first president from 1471 to 1481, followed by the four presidents of the Chambre des Enquêtes: Montdider, Le Sellier, Jean de la Réauté, and Jean Henry. Among the conseillers are members of important Parisian families of magistrates such as Burdelot, de Longueil, and de Montigny. Three greffiers (clerks), including the author of the manuscript, Jean Cheneteau, and four notaries complete the list. The huissiers follow in two columns in the lower margin, below Jean Cheneteau's signature. - First established by Louis IX of France on the Île de la cité in 1250 and regularized in a 1278 ordinance of Philip III, the Parlement de Paris would become one of the central legal and political institutions of the Ancien Régime. Juridically, the Parlement primarily functioned as an appellate court and court of cassation. Its political power arose from the parliamentary duty of enregistering all royal ordinances, letters patent, and edicts, which slowly evolved into a "droit de remonstrance" (right to remonstrate), as the Parlement could refuse to enregister royal legislation it deemed contrary to the interests of the people or the fundamental laws of the kingdom. The most significant political acts in its almost 540-year history were the opposition to the Jesuits that led to their expulsion from France in 1594, the revocation of the testament of Louis XIII in 1643, the Parlementary Fronde (1648/49), and the revocation of the testament of Louis XIV in 1715. While Louis XIV effectively weakened the political power of the Parlement between 1673 and 1715 by curtailing the Droit de remonstrance, the centralization of power and the disempowerment of the old nobility that marked French absolutism were strongly connected with the rise of the so-called "noblesse de robe", a class of educated magistrates, advocates, and merchants controlling the Parlement and other legal institutions. The most famous name connected both with the Parlement and the administration of Louis XIV is certainly Nicolas Fouquet, but important families such as the de Harlay, de Longueil (already present on this list), and Le Peletier might also be mentioned. - Minor tears and creases. With a large water spot affecting the text and a small stain affecting the title. - From the collection of Jean-Baptiste Gaignare, baron de Joursanvault (1748-92). Acquired in 1838 by Arthur Nouail de La Villegille (1803-82), president of the Société des antiquaires de France.
