Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. This is the 1963 reissue of "The Praise of Folly" by Desiderius Erasmus. It was translated from the Latin by Hoyt Hopewell Hudson, who also provides an Essay and Commentary on the work. On the front flap of the dust-jacket, we find the following laudatory comments about this famous work : |> For four hundred and thirty years the pungent satire and polished wit of Erasmus have not only furnished delectation for the reader, but have also exerted a stimulating intellectual influence on writers and thinkers in succeeding centuries. The profundity of the great Renaissance scholar's thought, animated by the charm of his presentation makes "The Praise of Folly" one of the great and satisfying adventures in literary discovery, and Mr. Hudson's translation conveys all the wisdom and appeal of the Erasmian spirit. <| TITLE : The Praise of Folly AUTHOR : Desiderius Erasmus (c. 1466 - 1536) TRANSLATION, INTRODUCTORY ESSAY & NOTES : Hoyt Hopewell Hudson (1893 - 1944) IMPRINT : Modern Library # 331 PLACE : New York DATE : [ © 1941 First Printing still on copyright page - But this copy released in 1963 ] EDITION : Reissue DETAILS : Trade hardcover (Toledano binding #8); 4 5/8" x 7", light gray cloth-covered binding with gilt lettering against black panels on spine and front cover - Modern Library device of running figure gilt-stamped on spine and front cover (Toledano #8); end-papers printed with the repeating motif designed by Rockwell Kent (End-papers D); contains an Introductory Essay, Notes and an Analysis; top text-block edge dyed black; [xliv] + 166 pages, plus 10 pages of Publisher's list; pictorial dust-jacket with picture of a pig reading a book on front panel - 1963 price still on front flap (Toledano jacket j). paperback. Zustand: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.…
