[++] "A Metagalactic Density Gradient" is a 1938 paper by Harlow Shapley that�describes his finding of a large-scale variation in the distribution of galaxies. The paper argues for a "metagalactic" gradient, or a change in galaxy density across the sky, based on galaxy counts from photographic plates, noting that some areas had twice as many galaxies as others.
