The Helmericks travel with the Eskimos as they depart from the Beechey Point trading post for their winter camps, hiring a young eskimo with his team of eight dogs to hunt and explore with them. They travel along the coast over the sea ice of the Arctic Ocean to the Colville River, then overland and south three days to their destination on the upper Itkillik River, in the heart of the caribou grounds. Accounts of the open hospitality of the Eskimos, as well as of the exciting hunts for caribou, polar bear, and seal.
