Soft Covers. Zustand: VG. No Jacket. Photos, Document, Map (illustrator). 1st. W A Laxon was an early participant in the revival of interest in NZ shipping history, which was triggered by the formation of a Maritime Section of the Auckland Museum in 1958. Laxon was one of the founding enthusiasts of the section and this monograph was an early printed product of that enthuaiasm. His publication is sub-titled " A short history of the trade from Auckland to Clevedon and outports and in paparticular, of the Clevedon Steam Navigation Company Limited." (CSNC). In an introduction to the booklet E G Turbott, Director of the Auckland Institute and Museum, described it as being a ". thorough and exceptionally well-balanced survey of an almost unknown period in Auckland's maritime history." Although the CNSC was formed in 1896, previous shipping operations in its area of interest, going back to the early days of Auckland development, are extensively covered in Laxon's work. Competition among the companies operating in the Waitemata Harbour and through to the Firth of Thames was fierce and some did not long survive in business. The CNSC was largely established through the support of residents of Clevedon, situated on the Wairoa River, south east from Auckland and near rhe entrace to the Waitamata Harbour. As the developing areas around Auckland and in the Firth of Thames depended of coastal shipping for eveyday and commercial needs there were many small ports to service, including those on the Waihou River, extending into land south of the Firth of Thames. as well as on the Thames Coast. Laxon's booklet covers the activities of the companies and their little steamers that serviced these communities, of which Clevedon was an important growth area in Auckland's development. By the 1920s the era af the little ships was over and in 1928 the CSNC was wound-up, having outlived many of its competitors. An appendix to the booklet lists details of about 30 of the small ships serving in the Auckland/Firth waters, including those of the CSNC, two of which were still in service, under different ownership, 60 years after the company ceased trading, The booklet is lliberally illustrated with historic photos, plus one map, First editiion of 1966, published by the author, 44 pages. VG card covers with photo to front have small ink name at top edge, ink name/address former owner top title page, text section otherwise VG+. few small marks to rear cover.

Soft Covers. Zustand: VG+. No Jacket. Photos, Map (illustrator). 1st. This scarce and important booklet provides a history of the development of the small coastal steamer services between Auckland and Firth of Thames, notably by the Clevedon Steam Navigation Company. These ships operated from the early 1850s to near the end of the 1920s, when improved land transport became dominant. The author became one of NZ's leading maritime historians and this early publication set the excellent standard, continued in his later works. First edition of 1966, 44 pages including list/details of steamers and motorships mentioned (one vessel's entry bordered with ball-pen) and directors list for the Clevedon company, b/w photos throughout, map/document. Card covers VG+, text block excellent, no inscriptions. Postage at cost for this small, light item.
