This volume contains a New Preface written for the 1883 edition as well as the Preface to the 1863 edition (which includes the Dedicatory Letter to Washington Irving found in the 1851 edition). Fine- condition. No Dust Jacket (as issued). The Text Block is clean, white, tight, straight and square with gilt top-edge, deckled fore-edges, frontispiece by Percy Moran with protective tissue in place, and no markings of any kind. The Binding is full dark green cloth with bright gilt border to front board, bright gilt oval surrounding a white, raised head of a Roman figure in center of front board, worn gilt title, etc., to spine, and some wear at corners and spine ends. See photos. 258 pages. 4" x 6 5/8". Pedro Calderon de la Barca wrote in 1636 a play entitled La Vida es sueño ("Life is a Dream"). Perhaps, that inspired Marvel/Mitchell, for the last paragraph of the book reads, "The old man does not stir: his eyes do not move: they seem fixed above. The child cries as his lips touch the cold cheek. - It is a tender SPRING flower upon the bosom of the dying WINTER.".

Half-Leather. Zustand: Very Good ++. Nd but inscription on verso of frontis is dated October 1853 and the book has been issued as volume 8 of the "readable books" series (see image of title page). 12 plates all present, including the frontis and vignette. 19th c. binding is in good shape with light wear to spine hinges and a little shelf wear being the only obvious signs of wear. Internally hinges intact and a gift inscription on verso of frontis. A little bit of foxing to the leading margins of the first, and last ten or so pages but it is minor apart from the final leaf where it is a bit more extensive. There are also a few spots on the odd page but very minor. An interesting binders label to the front end paper " Bound at the Operative Jewish Converts' Institution, Palestine Place, Bethnal Green, London". Postage will be confirmed when you enquire or order and for light or very heavy books will vary from the ABE quote which is based on a 1kg parcel. N.B. Postage to the USA will often be quite a bit less than the quote on ABE.
