The opening chapters trace his boyhood in Radford, Virginia, before moving to his years as a member of the Class of 1962 at the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis and his service as a Marine officer. The central episode is Ripley's action during the Easter Offensive of 1972, when Colonel Gerald Turley ordered him to hold his position against a force of some 30,000 North Vietnamese troops and 200 tanks; Ripley destroyed the Dong Ha bridge, preventing the enemy crossing, and was awarded the Navy Cross. Later sections address his outspoken public positions on women in combat, on all-male military schools, and on homosexuals in the armed forces, as well as his role as husband and father. His actions significantly hampered the North Vietnamese Army's advance into South Vietnam.
