From the preface This book highlights various sources of organic and biological agents which can be used for organic farming and as well as for maintenance of soil fertility over years. Organic manures are byproducts of processes of decomposition of organic materials available both in rural and urban areas. Organic manures have been used by the farmers from the beginning of agriculture. But it was neglected in India during the past two to three decades. The production of biofertilizers is a new development and they are produced by isolation selection and culturing on mass scale of specific microorganisms such as bacteria or fungi. Nitrogen fixing and phosphate solubilizing microorganisms are produced as biofertilizers and made available to farmers to supplement nitrogen and phosphorus needs of the crops with either organic or chemical fertilizers. Moreover these inputs are inexpensive and eco friendly. 667 pp.

Frankia non-leguminous symbiosis. 5. Free living nitrogen-fixing bacteria. 6. Azospirillum as biofertilizer. 7. Blue-green algae as biofertilizer. 8. Phosphate solubilizing microorganisms as biofertilizer. 9. Mycorrhizae as biofertilizer. 10. Organo-biofertilizer. 11. Development of biofertilizer industry. Appendix: Media and methods. Subject index. From the Preface: "Biofertilizers or microbial inoculants include biologically active and efficient bacteria, actinomycetes, Azolla, mycorrhizae etc. that can provide plant nutrients viz. nitrogen and phosphorus at cheaper cost when compared with chemical fertilizers. Moreover, biofertilizers and organic manures are environment friendly and important basic inputs for sustainable agriculture. Their integrated uses thus can cause a reduction in application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and overall cost of cultivation of crops. The monograph deals with various aspects of biofertilizers and manures, and technologies for their production and use. The biofertilizers viz. Rhizobium, Azotobacter, Azospirillum, blue-green algae, Frankia, Mycorrhizae, Rhizobium sp. and mineral phosphate solubilising microorganisms viz. Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Apergillus, Penicillium and others have been discussed in different chapters. The methods for production of enriched manures, factors affecting composting, role of cellulytic and lignolytic micro-organisms, methods of vermicomposting and standards for maturity of compost have been discussed in detail. The book is useful for the farmers and NGOs, interested in organic farming and will serve the purpose of both biologists and farm scientists, who are interested in using renewable and alternative sources of energy as organic farming inputs.".
