A history of the campaign for the vote from the outbreak of World War One until the passing of the 1908 Act which gave a limited num…ber of women the right to vote. The work details suffragette and suffragist reaction to the war. The powferful image to the front cover was taken from Punch, surprisingly as Punch was very hostile to the idea of women voting. The third work by Metcalfe on the question of women's suffrage. Agnes Edith Metcalfe (2nd March 1870 -6th October 1923) was a teacher, author and active suffragist. She was treasurer of the Women's Tax Resistance League. The League protested against the requirement for women to pay taxes while they remained ineligible to vote. In 1913, she appeared at Greenwich Court on Tuesday, charged with non-payment of taxes - The Suffrage newspaper The Vote reported that: she refused on conscientious grounds to pay taxes while women had no vote. The magistrate congratulated Miss Metcalfe on the clearness and eloquence with which she made out her case. He regretted that the law must take its course, and imposed a fine of 7s. with 2s. costs, recoverable by distraint. The alternative was one day's imprisonment. Good, a fragile book, the covers are reinforced at the hinges with archival tape, wear to spine and the extremities. An uncommon book with only a few recorded in institutional holdings and no copies listed at auction. Inscribed by Author(s).

Published during World War I and just before the Representation of the People Act of 1918, the book records the movement's pre-enfranchisement history while the political meaning of women's wartime citizenship was still unsettled. I did not retain the claim that no copies are recorded in American institutions because current catalog traces show institutional holdings and records vary by database. Spine minorly sunned, minor foxing to free endpaper, interior clean, illustrations bright; very good. A substantial suffrage history combining movement chronology with contemporary political interpretation.

Publisher's review copy, stamped as such to the title page, the reviewer was militant suffragette, W.S.P.U. member and fellow author, Evelyn Sharp, with… her ownership inscription in ink to the front endpaper dated 1917, and passages to the text highlighted in pencil. The book is quite firmly bound in the publisher's green cloth, lettered in faded white to the spine, the cloth is slightly marked and rubbed, the spine is sunned and the extremities are bumped. The text block is age toned, slightly marked and dusty, with a few dog-eared page corners and slight cracking at points. The first of three works by Metcalfe, herself an active suffragist, on the question of women's suffrage, this a history which becomes increasingly detailed during the period of which Metcalfe has first-hand knowledge, with particular emphasis on the activities of the militant suffragettes. This, a superb association copy, originally owned by one of the more famous suffragettes.
