Bound in full leather with raised bands and lacking spine labels. However spines are stamped 1 2 3 & 4. Vol 1 has 24 and 584 pages; Vol 2 has 12 and 620; Vol 3 has 1…0 and 546; Vol 4 has 8 and 548 and unpaginated index (to all 4 vols). Volumes 2-4 each have two title labels (the second with chapter resumés). Fairly clean tight texts with slight browning mostly to prelims etc and text edges. Some hinges cracking but all covers holding. Some brown stains to edges of endpapers and first and last few leaves. Vol 2 & 4 endpapers rather marked and Vol 2 3 4 some round paper scraps adhered to prelims. ?Contemporary armorial bookplate of Townley featuring their arms (Argent, on a fesse sable, a cinquefoil or, in chief three mullets of the second) in wreaths of flowers etc but not their name. Les illustrations sont dessinées par Boucher, Eisen, Gravelot, Le Prince, Monnet et Moreau, et gravées notamment par Baquoy, Basan, Binet, Duclos et de Ghendt. Le frontispice, trois des quatre fleurons de titre et la majorité des vignettes sont dus à Pierre-Philippe Choffard, tandis que le quatrième fleuron et plusieurs vignettes reviennent à Charles Monnet. La traduction française de l'abbé Antoine Banier, accompagnée de ses explications historiques et d'une Vie d'Ovide, est imprimée en regard du texte latin. Figures sur fort papier vélin, texte sur beau papier vélin fin. Exemplaire bien complet de l'avis au relieur placé à la fin du tome IV. Les titres portent les adresses de Delormel (tome I, 1767) et de Despilly (tome IV, 1771), combinaison caractéristique du premier tirage recherché, la date du quatrième volume constituant l'un des principaux critères d'identification de cet état. Reliures de l'époque en plein maroquin rouge glacé, dos à cinq nerfs richement ornés de caissons et de fleurons dorés. Très bel état de conservation, ensemble particulièrement frais ; quelques rares piqûres et pâles rousseurs, quelques planches légèrement brunies. Au mors supérieur du tome III, une petite perforation et une micro-fente. Ex-libris armorié de William Vincens Bouguereau, vraisemblablement petit-fils du peintre William Bouguereau par sa fille Henriette, et carte de visite jointe au nom du baron de Noirmont. * Cette édition des Métamorphoses est le fruit d'une entreprise collective réunissant autour du graveur Noël Le Mire et de l'éditeur-graveur Pierre-François Basan quelques-uns des meilleurs dessinateurs et graveurs parisiens de la fin du règne de Louis XV. Saluée par Cohen parmi les ouvrages « les plus galamment illustrés » du XVIII? siècle et considérée par Gordon N. Zijn Explication historique des fables geldt als een van de invloedrijkste achttiende-eeuwse studies over de Griekse en Romeinse mythologie. Banier verwierp de opvatting dat klassieke mythen louter verzinsels waren en betoogde dat zij een historische kern bevatten, die door overlevering, dichterlijke verbeelding en symboliek was vervormd. Door mythen systematisch te vergelijken met antieke historische bronnen, probeerde hij de oorspronkelijke gebeurtenissen en personen achter de fabels te reconstrueren.Het werk kende talrijke Franse en buitenlandse edities en vertalingen en werd gedurende de gehele achttiende eeuw beschouwd als een standaardwerk voor de studie van de klassieke oudheid. Het oefende grote invloed uit op historici, theologen, filologen en kunstenaars en droeg bij aan de Verlichtingsopvatting dat de klassieke mythologie met behulp van kritisch historisch onderzoek verklaard kon worden. Ook in de Nederlanden was het werk bijzonder populair, getuige de vroege Nederlandse vertaling Historische verklaring der Fabelen (Amsterdam, 1725).

Belles reliures de l'époque en plein veau marbré, dos à 5 nerfs avec pièces de titre et de tomaison en maroquin bordeaux foncé, entrenerfs à motifs floraux dorés, double filet doré sur les coupes, tranches rouges. Gardes de papier marbré. Coupes et coins légèrement frottés, coiffes restaurées, bas de la page de titre du volume 2 restaurée, deux taches sur les plats des deux volumes, rares taches de rousseur, autrement ouvrage solide et en bon état. Bel exemplaire. Compte parmi les éditions de cette célèbre traduction de Banier parue peu après l'originale de 1732 à Amsterdam. La nôtre a été éditée la même année que "La Mythologie et les Fables expliquée par l'histoire" par Banier, chez Briasson. Le Jugement de Paris serait de Jean-Baptiste Morvan de Bellegarde; la vie d'Ovide de Cl. P. Goujet. (Voir: Brunet I, 455 / Goujet, Hist. litt. française, 1742, VI, p. 402 / Quérard, VI, 527).
