The book features illustrations on every page of text, all drawn within the outline of a maple leaf. The story is printed on every other page - there are 38 pages in all. On each page are lines of poetry and prose from noted writers and works such as Thomas Paine ("These are the times that try men's souls"), Robert Burns, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, As You Like It & Midsummer Night's Dream (Shakespeare), Izaak Walton, John Milton, Sir Walter Scott, John Bunyan, Thomas Moore, Paradise Lost, The Odyssey.and many more. The book is a humorous story about the misadventures of a family of city dwellers who decide to rent a country house for a peaceful summer retreat. The story follows the protagonist, Mr. G. Adolphus Feakins, and his friend Solomon Dodd, as they try to find an economical and tranquil escape in upstate New York. Their plan for an idyllic summer quickly unravels when they encounter the various realities and problems of country living, much to the amusement or chagrin of their wives.
