Wol's artistic work was created exclusively in France, where he had emigrated in 1932. Inspired by Surrealism and the Bauhaus masters and without professional training, after a short period as a photographer, he first created surrealist and later informal drawings and paintings. In particular, the oil works of his later phase influenced French and German painters of the Art Informel. Jean-Paul Sartre and other French writers appreciated him as a book illustrator.
