Illustrated with a section of black-and-white photographic plates. "Earl Warren is rightly remembered not only as one of the great chief justices of the Supreme Court, but as one of the most influential Americans of the twentieth century. Warren Court decisions such as Brown v. Board of Education, Miranda, and Baker v. Carr have given us such famous phrases as "separate is not equal," "read him his rights," and "one-man-one-vote: - and have vastly expanded civil rights and personal liberties. A generation later the Warren Court's decisions still define American freedoms. It was a judicial revolution long in coming, as Ed Cray reminds us in this masterful biography of the fourteenth chief justice of the United States. Earl Warren reached the high court only after a long career, first as a tough district attorney, then as California state attorney general and a central figure in bringing about the evacuation of Japanese and Japanese-Americans from California after Pearl Harbor. Finally, as governor he emerged as a national political figure, was praised as a Republican moderate, and was named Thomas Dewey's running mate in 1948. Four years later, Warren and the fast-rising Richard Nixon tangled at the Republican National Convention. Cray provides a fresh view of the bitter, almost visceral rivalry between the two men, and Nixon's role in undercutting Warren's presidential bid. In 1953 President Dwight Eisenhower repaid a political debt and appointed Warren to the "first vacancy" on the Court. It was an appointment Eisenhower would regret as the Warren-led court remade America in its liberal interpretation of the Constitution. But Warren was a man John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson called friend - one reason Johnson pressured Warren into heading the commission investigating Kennedy's death. Cray's interviews with the commission staff reveal details of the investigation never before told, including Warren's interview with Jack Ruby. Ed Cray recounts this truly American story in the finest and most comprehensive biography of Earl Warren. He has interviewed nearly all of the Chief's law clerks, four of his children, and more than one hundred others, many of whom recall for the first time their years with Warren. He has read thousands of personal letters and offical documents deposited in ten libraries across the country, weaving them into a tale of political intrigue, judicial politics, family reminiscences, and a loving marriage." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.
