She was one of the first women artists to make a major part of her living through the commercial press, selling satirical and comic illustrations to more than half a dozen periodicals." This Claxton book is subtitled Several Hundreds of Num-nums and Nicy-nicies. Claxton did mostly illustrations for periodicals - she only produced two books which are quite rare. This book is filled with her often comic illustrations. Is this a first edition? The second author, Ross, has a preface dated 1875. That is the only date in the book. With a lot of searching of the internet we found an image of a different title page - the different one is in color and lacks the subtitle Several Hundreds of Num-nums and Nicy-nicies. The color title page looks like it might be from a soft cover edition, but that is not clear. The book is half leather on brown cloth. The spine has five hubs and a label. Corners and extremities are quite worn but the binding is very solid. Full refund if not satisfied.
