Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Second Edition. Full title: Historical Facts versus Historical Fictions. Part I: The First Baptist Church in America, NOT founded or pastored by Roger Williams, and his invalid baptism never transmitted to any Baptist Church; but Dr. John Clarke was the founder and pastor fo the First Baptist Church in America, at Newport, R.I., and the author and procurer of the First Charter that secured free and full religious liberty for Baptists and all denominations.""Part II. A Brief History of Roger Williams, Dr. John Clarke, and O. Holmes, and of the cruel persecutions endured by them and the First Baptists of New England for the word of God and the testimony of Jesus".Written from a 19th-century Baptist (particularly Landmark-influenced) viewpoint, the book seeks to establish historical priority for the Newport congregation and to correct what Adlam and Graves saw as ?historical fictions.? It stresses continuity of Baptist principles, the importance of valid baptism, and the sufferings of early Baptists under Puritan authorities in Massachusetts. The work remains of interest to students of Baptist historiography, especially those examining debates over origins, succession, and the relative claims of the Providence and Newport churches.ABOUT THIS COPY: Softcover, the binding is covered in clear contact paper to protect it. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In the 1970s, Basil Bernstein's work on children's sociolinguistic codes and his formulation of the contexts in which they are transmitted were the most influential in the field. However, as Diana Adlam points out, neither code nor context as Bernstein saw them can be properly grasped until they are understood in interaction. Originally published in 1977, this collection of papers contains both theoretical and empirical investigations of Bernstein's ideas, and seeks to make that necessary connection. The study as a whole is concerned primarily with Basil Bernstein's ideas on the relationship of different familial transmission systems to the way in which children learn to use language. The theoretical chapter stresses Bernstein's present emphasis on the semantic orientations which different children may be acquiring, and discusses these ideas in relation to work being done elsewhere at the time by other sociolinguistics, particularly in the United States. The empirical chapters provide analyses of how children of different social backgrounds differ in their approach to language use and also show the structural relationship of talk across a variety of specific contexts. Today it can be read against its historical backdrop.…
