Adolph Drewsen regalò il 30 ottobre 1959 alla nipote Christine Stampe il libro di figure qui riprodotto, composto da diversi ritagli proveneinti dalle fonti più disparate: fogli di figure, periodici, libri, giornali, francesi, inglesi, danesi, tedeschi: oltre 1000 immagini, pagine illustrate, vignette e fregi, distribuiti in 123 grandi tavole, a comporre uno straordinario caleidoscopio, un luna park di soprese, accostamenti insoliti e surreali, per formare un discorso sapientemente costruito e continuo, nel quale domina una forte componente cinematografica, una ricerca quasi ossessiva del movimento. Creato più per il diletto deinosti due protagonisti che avevano osservato la beata festosità dei bambini, riproponendola qui con la massima esattezza. I versi sono stati tradotti in italiano da  Francesco Saba Sardi che ha curato il volume per l'edizione italiana e le tavole sono commentate da  Erik Dal, il massimo studio del'opera di Andersen.
