Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book analyzes the Aeschinean tradition, specifically the problems and issues of textual criticism, authorship, and interpolation. The author establishes principles of classification and reconstruction that reveal the intricate relationships among the three extant textual traditions: the A tradition with grammatical apparatus, the B tradition without it, and the medieval tradition that includes the scholia. This book also provides insights into the complex and uncertain textual history of Aeschines' orations and offers a comprehensive description of the archetype from which all extant copies ultimately descend. It explores how Aeschines' speeches were transmitted and modified over time, how ancient scholars approached and edited them, and how modern scholars can use textual criticism to recover the original text and meaning of Aeschines' work. The author argues that Aeschines' speeches were subjected to various forms of interpolation and alteration and that Aeschines' orations were interpolated already in an early stage of their transmission and contaminated with interpretative material and grammatical commentary. Moreover, the book demonstrates that the text of Aeschines' speeches was transmitted through two main branches of tradition, each with its own characteristics and developments. This book is a valuable resource for scholars and students of Aeschines' orations, textual criticism, and the history of ancient Greek literature. It sheds light on the complex and fascinating process of literary transmission and preservation in antiquity, and provides a deeper understanding of the challenges and rewards of textual criticism.
