Il suo valore varia da 1 a 6 V, a seconda dei carichi collegati e dello squilibrio tra le fasi. La tensione è massima nelle ore di punta, a mezzogiorno. La tensione è minima al mattino e alla sera. Finora non è stato fatto alcun uso pratico di questa piccola differenza di potenziale. Sono stati condotti degli esperimenti per verificare la credibilità di questa piccola tensione per le applicazioni pratiche. Il campo più importante che è stato trovato è quello dell'elettrolisi. Gli elettroliti forti e deboli richiedono circuiti diversi per un corretto utilizzo del potenziale NE. Existe uma pequena DP entre o terminal neutro e o terminal de terra devido à queda de tensão através da resistência do fio neutro. Até à data, não houve qualquer utilização prática desta pequena diferença de potencial. Foram efectuadas experiências para determinar a credibilidade desta pequena tensão para aplicações práticas. O campo mais importante que foi encontrado é o da electrólise. Os electrólitos fortes e fracos requerem circuitos diferentes para a utilização adequada do potencial NE.
