Chapter seven assesses changes in the Chilean party system and links these to similar processes elsewhere. The mass mobilisation and collective fury following the 1948 assassination of popular Liberal leader Jorge Eliécer Gaitán further demonstrated the potential for radical, mass-led movements.The Resilience of Elite Oligarchies: Despite these volatile social conditions, Colombia's traditional political institutions remained remarkably intact. The country's political sphere continued to be heavily dominated by its two traditional elite-controlled factions: the Liberal Party and the Conservative Party.Institutional Adaptation: Angell argues that these traditional parties survived because they were flexible and adaptable enough to respond to social changes. By incorporating moderate reforms and absorbing smaller dissident factions (such as the Movimiento Revolucionario Liberal), the traditional ruling elites effectively "took the steam out" of emergent populist or reformist challenges.
