The work includes a fine map of "Moscovia", and a bird's-eye city view of the city.Herberstein's book includes 3 maps, the first modern plan of Moscow and two maps of Muscovy, one topographical and one including physical features. In his work on the early cartography of Russia, Leo Bagrow notes:Herberstein was twice at Moscow-in 1517 and 1526. Herberstein's knowledge of a Slavonic language facilitated his intercourse with local inhabitants on his travels in Russia, and his academic education gave him a desire for knowledge of a country so little known to Western Europe. He missed no opportunity to question the people he met, not only on the customs and government of the country, but also on its geography, and particularly that of the border regions. He verified the information he collected by cross-questioning different persons on the same subject, and he also tried to obtain various written documents and records of itineraries. He attempted to procure maps too, but as these, besides being very scarce, were kept strictly secret by the authorities, he tried to persuade those whose knowledge he could trust to prepare maps for him. According to Lyatsky, who however made this statement after having left Russia, he had asked him to compile a map but met with a refusal.Herberstein does not tell us whether he succeeded in obtaining cartographic materials from any other person. But he certainly obtained plenty of oral information and some graphic material too. Thus we know that Grigoryi Istome and Vlasiy and Dmitriy Gerasimov, separately, described to him the navigation from the mouth of the North - Dvina, round Scandinavia, to Denmark. In a contemporary panelled calf with red morocco label to spine. A fascinating volume, bringing together two 16th century humanist geographical and historical surveys of Italy and Germany. Alberti"s influential chorography of Italy is bound with Irenicus"s wide-ranging description of Germany. Compromising: 1567 Descriptio Totius Italiae by Leandro Alberti. First published in Bologna in 1550, in Italian, by Anselmo Giaccarelli, this is the first Latin edition. Leandro Alberti (1479-1552) was a Dominican friar, historian, humanist, and geographer from Bologna. A close friend of most of the contemporary literati, frequently mentioned in the letters of the poet Giovanni Antonio Flaminio. 1570Totius Germaniae Descriptio by Franciscus Irenicus. First published in 1518 as Germaniae exegeseos volumina duodecim, this is a later edition. Franciscus Irenicus (c.1495-1553) was a German humanist historian and theologian associated with the intellectual culture of the Reformation era. Slight fading and spotting to boards, heavier to perimeters. One or two scratches and handling marks. Lacking ties. Bookplates of Sir Frederick Evelyn, 3rd Baronet and J. E. to the front pastedown.Small ink annotations to front endpapers. Slight discolouration to endpapers from binder's glue. Paper to rear paste down lifting slightly. Worming to endpapers, more so to paste down. Internally, generally firmly bound. Hinge strained at title page, exposing cords. Very small perforation from worming to rear visible from A6 of "Germaniae" onwards, not affecting the legibility of the text. Very minor loss to fore edges of N3-4 of "Germaniae." Slight age toning, heavier to fore edge and first and last few leaves, notably bright and clean for the period. Light scattered spotting to fore edge. (212 n.n.), e ff. 26 del ?Libro Primo della Deca Seconda?, curiosamente rilegato tra il primo e il secondo libro della Deca prima; numerose iniziali figurate in xilografia. Legatura coeva in pergamena, titolo ms. al dorso (dorso restaurato). I primi cinque libri della Deca hanno tutti frontespizi figurati con da belle bordure architettoniche, con al verso xilografie a piena pagina raffiguranti l'allegoria della Virtù che sorregge un cartiglio con presentazione di ciascun libro, alle sue spalle un volume con impressa la scritta ?Bononia docet? I restanti 5 libri non hanno frontespizio proprio. Il Libro primo della Deca Seconda, probabilmente uscito nel 1543, ha anch'esso frontespizio architettonico e al verso bellissima raffigurazione della città di Bologna: si tratta della prima rappresentazione realistica della città felsinea mai data alle stampe. Edizione originale della prima deca, che tratta il periodo storico fino al 1 gennaio 1253, della notissima cronaca storica della città di Bologna a cura del frate ed erudito domenicano Leandro Alberti (1479-1552). I successivi libri, dal secondo (deca seconda) al quinto, apparvero tra il 1543 e 1591 presso vari stampatori. Il resto delle Historie, fino all'anno 1543, rimane inedito e si conserva manoscritto alla Biblioteca universitaria di Bologna. Non comune legato con la Deca Seconda. Terza edizione dell'opera, dopo la prima bolognese del 1550 e la seconda veneziana del 1551 (Pietro e Giovanni Maria Nicolini da Sabbio): ristampa «con somma diligenza corretta», che conferma il successo editoriale immediato di quella che resta una delle più importanti e influenti descrizioni corografiche dell'Italia nel pieno Cinquecento. Ampia "geografia" storico-antiquaria e civile della penisola: oltre al sito e alla ripartizione dei paesi, registra origini e assetti di città e castelli, doppia nominazione antica/moderna, costumi e "condizioni" dei popoli; include inoltre notizie su uomini illustri, e un inventario di elementi naturali e risorse (monti, laghi, fiumi, fontane, bagni, miniere) e delle "opere meravigliose" della natura.
