Alberto Burri (Città di Castello, 1915 - Nizza, 1995), è stato uno dei più importanti artisti italiani del dopoguerra. Laureato in medicina, durante la seconda guerra mondiale fu chirurgo militare in Africa. Nel 1944 trascorse un periodo di prigionia in un campo di ufficiali italiani del Texas, dove scopri la pittura, dapprima come svago, poi come passione. Tornato in Italia nel 1946, decise di rinunciare alla professione medica per dedicarsi interamente all'attività artistica. Tra il 1946 e il 1948 compose quadri figurativi, per passare poi, con i Catrami e le Muffe, a composizioni astratte nelle quali già il problema della materia si faceva urgente. Tra il 1950 e il 1955 apparvero i famosi Sacchi, nei quali la tela grezza del sacco, cucita, lacerata o bruciata, formava insieme l'oggetto e il soggetto dell'opera, la sua concreta sostanza e il suo significato. Alle tele si sono sostituiti i Legni, dal 1955, e i Ferri dal 1958. Negli anni Sessanta è stata la volta delle combustioni plastiche.Fra le sue mostre più importanti si ricordano le diverse partecipazioni alla  Biennale di Venezia;  alla Triennale di Milano;  a Documenta; alla Biennale di  San Paolo; la mostra antologica del 1996 al Palazzo delle Esposizioni di Roma; la mostra alle Scuderie del Quirinale nel 2005, decimo anniversario della morte, ed infine la retrospettiva al Solomon R.
