Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Chicken Thieves of Watertown is a multigenerational, historical, novel inspired by a true story. In 1915, Croatian immigrant Sam Rajkovic steals chickens to feed his family in Rock Island, Illinois. Arrested and shot while attempting to escape, he dies the following day and is buried in an unmarked paupers' grave. His orphaned son, Daniel Whitmarsh, is adopted and grows up unaware of his true origins. He becomes a celebrated athlete, serves as a Navy navigator during World War II, and later builds a life in rural Illinois marked by both success and personal setbacks, all while quietly wondering where he came from. Decades later, Daniel's daughter, Pam Alcorn, uncovers the forgotten story of Sam Rajkovic through historical records and genealogical research. Together, father and daughter retrace their family's journey from an unmarked grave in Illinois to their ancestral roots in Croatia. In the end, Daniel discovers the identity he spent a lifetime seeking, revealing how one desperate act can echo across generations and how persistence can restore a family's lost history.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This book examines whether artificial intelligence can meaningfully substitute for the jury as the principal fact-finder in the American legal system. Rather than treating the question primarily as a constitutional issue governed by the Sixth and Seventh Amendments, the book approaches it as a problem of epistemology and institutional design: what cognitive and normative tasks does the jury actually perform when it renders a verdict, and can those tasks be replicated by computational systems Drawing on scholarship in legal epistemology, cognitive psychology, and artificial intelligence, the book argues that the jury is not merely an evidence-weighing mechanism but an epistemic institution that integrates credibility assessments, narrative reasoning, and community moral judgment into authoritative determinations of legally sufficient truth under conditions of uncertainty. Jury verdicts emerge from a collective process of human interpretation structured by adversarial procedure, evidentiary rules, and deliberation-features that reflect the legal system's recognition that fact-finding in trials is fundamentally interpretive and normative rather than purely computational. The book further argues that although contemporary AI systems-particularly machine learning models and large language models-excel at pattern recognition, large-scale document analysis, and probabilistic inference, these capabilities do not translate into reliable adjudicative judgment. Algorithmic systems remain vulnerable to hallucination, opacity, adversarial manipulation, and failures of contextual understanding, and they lack the embodied social reasoning and moral accountability that jury verdicts presuppose. Even if AI systems were eventually able to outperform human jurors in predictive accuracy, replacing juries with algorithmic decision-makers would transform adjudication from a democratic process of collective judgment into a technocratic system of optimized prediction, thereby undermining the institutional legitimacy that jury verdicts provide. The most plausible near-term role for AI is therefore augmentation rather than substitution: AI may assist juries by organizing evidence, reconstructing timelines, and translating complex expert testimony, but the ultimate act of judgment must remain human.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This essay examines the concept of cruelty as a persistent and paradoxical feature of human society and the law's uneven efforts to define, regulate, and at times justify it. Drawing on philosophy, literature, international human rights instruments, and American constitutional doctrine, the essay develops a functional definition of cruelty grounded in intentional suffering, lack of moral necessity, and violations of human dignity. It traces how U.S. law addresses cruelty across doctrinal domains-including criminal punishment, constitutional protections, tort law, immigration law, and family law-while highlighting the tension between the law's stated abhorrence of cruelty and its continued tolerance or deployment of it for utilitarian ends. The essay further explores state-sponsored and legally sanctioned forms of cruelty, interrogating contemporary practices such as capital punishment, assisted suicide, abortion, deportation, and systemic social conditions like homelessness. Ultimately, it argues that while Western legal systems profess evolving standards of decency, cruelty remains embedded in legal structures, often obscured by necessity, deterrence, or moral abstraction, and that a clearer jurisprudential engagement with human dignity is essential to meaningfully confronting cruelty in modern law.…
