In questo teatro senza sipario, ogni gesto - una verifica, un colloquio, una circolare - rivela un equilibrio fragile, continuamente negoziato. A emergere, con discrezione ma insistenza, è il mutamento profondo delle nuove generazioni, segnate da una relazione diversa con il tempo, l'attenzione, il sapere. La scuola, chiamata a rispondere, oscilla tra slanci innovativi e derive formali, mentre il rischio di smarrire una visione complessiva si fa sempre più concreto. Ne nasce una scrittura che osserva senza indulgenza e senza compiacimento, capace di restituire la complessità di un'istituzione cruciale, mettendone a nudo contraddizioni e possibilità. Esemplare poco raro di una generazione di eterni studenti, si aggira per le strade di una città di provincia con un fiuto infallibile che lo fa arrivare immancabilmente in ritardo agli appuntamenti con la vita. L'università, il lavoro, l'amore, la politica, lo sport. non manca niente nella vita del dottor Pistelli, tranne la capacità di stare al passo con i tempi e con la propria età anagrafica. La sua è una vita pencolante, anfibia, le sue disavventure fanno sorridere, ma lasciano a volte un po' di amaro in bocca. Troppo istruito per essere un vero picaro, ma non abbastanza per essere un vero intellettuale, il dottor Pistelli rimane sospeso tra ambizioni sognanti e bruschi ritorni alla realtà, tra vicende fantozziane e speculazioni pseudo-filosofiche. Pubblicati su riviste nel corso degli anni, i racconti di questo volume finiscono per comporsi in un tragicomico romanzo di formazione a episodi, ognuno dei quali è illustrato con ironia da Nazareno Giusti.
