Sie hat mit ihren beiden Vorgängerinnen am Nord- und Südportal des Baptiste-riums so wenig gemein und fällt auch sonst so sehr aus dem Rahmen der bestehenden Traditionen heraus, daß die Entstehung ihres revolutionären Konzeptes noch heute als rätselhaft gilt. Der vorliegende Kunststück-Band versucht das Rätsel durch eine Neuinterpretation der Vorgeschichte der Tür zu lösen. Er zeigt, daß Ghibertis Innovation in gewisser Weise vorprogrammiert war. Ghiberti war bei der Konzeption seiner ersten, heute am Nordportal befindlichen Tür (1403-24) gezwungen gewesen, sich an das gotische Rahmensystem der seit 1336 vorhandenen Südportaltüre Andrea Pisanos zu halten. Er hatte seine Bildideen nur unter Inkaufnahme eines eklatanten ästhetischen Widerspruches zwischen Rahmen und Gerahmtem ausdrücken können.
