Né à Montpellier dans un milieu modeste, Alexandre Cabanel a connu une ascension fulgurante jusqu'à devenir une figure institutionnelle couverte d'honneurs. Académie de France à Rome, Second Prix de Rome, médaillé Première classe à l'Exposition universelle de 1855, membre de l'Institut impérial de France, professeur et chef d'atelier aux Beaux-Arts, officier de l'Ordre impériale de la Légion d'Honneur. Portraitiste de Napoléon III, de sa femme Eugénie et des grands de ce monde, Cabanel a honoré de nombreuses commandes officielles (Salon des Cariatides de l'Hôtel de Ville de Paris, chapelle du château de Vincennes.) au cours de sa prolifique carrière.
