Ausgebildet wurde er beim Landschaftsmaler Francois Diday. Ab 1835 stellte er seine schweizerischen Alpen- und Waldlandschaften in Paris und Berlin aus. Ab den 1840er Jahren gilt Calame europaweit als einer der bedeutendsten Vertretern der spätromantischen Landschaftsmalerei.
