paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Most of our very good books have only minor imperfections such as shelf wear consistent with a new book that's sat on a bookshop shelf for a year or two. Occasionally we may miss other minor imperfections as we have to grade books at speed. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.…

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. In August 1973, the large and growing television audience of the Soviet Union first laid eyes on what would become its quintessential if fictitious hero spy. He was nothing liketo global fame in the 1960s. By contrast, Shtirlits made his middle-aged man on a meditative stroll in wintry woods, to the score of a very slow piano rendition of the show'swistful signature theme. The Cold War East, the Soviet Union and its sphere of domination and influence in Eastern Europe, produced a rich array of home-made intelligence heroes who became vastly popular among television audiences in the 1960s and '70s. In this work, Tarik Cyril Amar recovers and analyzes a world of spy fiction entertainment, focusing on three blockbuster series in the former Soviet bloc: Seventeen Moments of Spring (USSR), Stakes Greater Than Life (Poland), and The Invisible Visor (East Germany). Not only did these shows feature secret agents as heroes, but they were also important to party-state authorities, including security and intelligence services, who were combatting Western subversion and deliberately polishing their own image behind the Iron Curtain. The series made reference to World War II, the Holocaust, and the Cold War, shaping public interpretations of historical events and inspiring a rising generation to join intelligence services, including Vladmir Putin. And they remained persistently popular, surviving the collapse of the authoritarian-socialist political regimes under which they had been produced. Based on exhaustive research of unpublished primary sources in archives in Berlin, Moscow, and Warsaw, James Bond's Socialist Rivals offers a more expansive vision of the phenomenon of the spy as popular-culture hero and of the complex nature of Cold War interactions across ideological divisions, geopolitical blocs, and national borders. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In The Paradox of Ukrainian Lviv, Tarik Cyril Amar reveals the local and transnational forces behind the twentieth-century transformation of one of East Central Europe's most important multiethnic borderland cities into a Soviet and Ukrainian urban center. Today, Lviv is the modern metropole of the western part of independent Ukraine and a center and symbol of Ukrainian national identity as well as nationalism. Over the last three centuries it has also been part of the Habsburg Empire, interwar Poland, a World War I Russian occupation regime, the Nazi Generalgouvernement, and, until 1991, the Soviet Union.Lviv's twentieth-century history was marked by great violence, massive population changes, and fundamental transformation. Under Habsburg and Polish rule up to World War II, Lviv was a predominantly Polish city as well as one of the major centers of European Jewish life. Immediately after World War II, Lviv underwent rapid Soviet modernization, bringing further extensive change. Over the postwar period, the city became preponderantly Ukrainian--ethnically, linguistically, and in terms of its residents' self-perception. Against this background, Amar explains a striking paradox: Soviet rule, which came to Lviv in its most ruthless Stalinist shape and lasted for half a century, left behind the most Ukrainian version of the city in history. In reconstructing this dramatic and profound change, Amar also illuminates the historical background to present-day identities and tensions within Ukraine. …
