Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Kennisburg, Texas, 1951. A fully realized postwar Texas: Studebakers parked behind diners, jukeboxes playing Lefty Frizzell, segregated taverns where one mechanic served at Anzio and another dug graves in the Netherlands. Into this town walks J. Aloysius McMann, ex-cop, ex-soldier, ex-everything, missing most of his patience. His partner is a green-headed mallard he met in a snowdrift in the Ardennes the day his patrol got cut to pieces. Duck does not talk in the way a reader might expect. Duck communicates, judges, stands watch, and when the moment requires it gets a switchblade out of a man's hand faster than McMann can swing.Hired by trucking owner Chet Greechly to find a missing partner and six thousand stolen dollars, McMann tracks the man to a one-room apartment in Mulkeen and finds a story about blackmail, a platinum blonde named Lily, and a Dallas gangster named Jimmy Quitclaim, whose Checkers Mob got its name in a story nobody in the county sheriff's office wants to repeat out loud. What the case runs through:A blackmail photographer with a ladder, a darkroom, and very few scruplesA gang with a ridiculous name and a real body countA platinum blonde nobody can find and a brunette who keeps turning up where she should notA county sheriff with a fine singing voice and an unnervingly fast drawThe period is written without nostalgia and the violence without flinching. The duck is treated as a partner, no more and no less. The flashbacks to the Hurtgen Forest and the Bulge are memory, not exposition. The race lines of 1951 Texas appear exactly where they appeared, and the book neither preaches about them nor pretends they were not there. It earns its dry humor by paying full price for it.For readers of Joe R. Lansdale's East Texas, Charles Willeford's deadpan ruined detectives, Walter Mosley's postwar Los Angeles, and Stuart Kaminsky's period gumshoes. A standalone novel from Raconteur Press. A complete story, with the door left open.…
