It was first performed at the Savoy Theatre, London, and the production was overseen by the author and composer themselves. It is an opera comique in three acts, with a libretto by Frederic E. Weatherly and Harry Greenbank. The lyrics for the revised version, which has new scenes and characters, were written by Adrian Ross. Mirette is a gypsy girl who falls in love with Gerard de Montigny, the nephew of the Marquise de Montigny. The opera follows the couple as they navigate the challenges of their relationship, including the disapproval of Gerard's family and the machinations of the villainous Bobinet. Along the way, the opera explores themes of love, loyalty, and the clash between different social classes.
