An unknown printing from 1937, with brightly decorative yellow paper over boards, this hardcover small quarto (8" x 10.5") is downgraded to Fair condition because the text block has completely separated from the boards, but is still internally securely held with two staples. All pages present & unmarked, though tanned, heavily around edges, commensurate with age & poor paper quality. Spine is torn, with loss of paper. Het leven van den Prins ziet hij als een opgang uit de duisternis naar het licht; hij teekent diens zwaren levensweg: bitter en vol ontgoocheling dient Willem van Oranje alleen het hoogere, zonder eenige verwachting voor zichzelf; hij roept het volk op tot eenheid tegen de onderdrukking en vertrouwt kalm op God. De tegenspelende figuren rondom den Prins worden met een enkel woord getypeerd: Granvelle, Marg. van Parma; ook Egmond en Hoorne, beiden slachtoffers van Spaansche wraakzucht; voorts de tyran Alva, die denkt het ?volk van boter? te kunnen verpletteren, daar hij ?menschen van ijzer? heeft kunnen temmen. En dan niet te vergeten Philips II, die slechts asch en bloed en jammer over ons volk heeft gebracht. Van Spaansche zijde heeft men van den Prins gezegd: ?Een man van diep genie, met weidsche ambitie, gevaarlijk, verrassend, politiek? In werkelijkheid is het Willem van Oranje?s ideaal geweest het volk te dienen. Zoo heeft hij zijn leven ingezet voor vrijheid en recht. In den hartstochtelijken en toch zoo beminlijken geus-edelman heeft André Peters het lijden en strijden van een klein volk voor een rechtvaardige zaak, met kleurrijke tafreelen uitgebeeld.

Tan linen spine that has probably been rebound. Spine is intact but one of the three signatures is slightly loose. Pages are clean but have light tanning. No rips, bends, or writing inside. A moral tale of tragedy when three small children find three baby birds and determine to raise them instead of taking them back to their nest.

[II] The second text, byJohn Flanders, is in Dutch, illustrated with 4 original full page engravings, all signed by the artist ; and 7 ornamental letters. Extraordinary belgian bibliophile edition in the sphere of ''Magic Realism''. This is one of the very rare publications which contains two texts, different from each other, and different in language, but by the same author. Indeed Raymond Jean de Kremer (Gent 1887- Gent 1964) was a Flemish writer who felt himself equally at ease when writing French or Dutch. Initially he used the pseudonym Jean Ray for his French ; and John Flanders for his Dutch writings. He is generally considered to be the main precursor of Magic Realism in French Belgian and Flemish Dutch literature. The very fine engravings were pulled by the artist himself ; André Goezu, born (1939) and educated in Antwerp, of jewish descent. He moved to Paris in 1968 where he still lives.
