August Wilhelm Andreae (1794-1867), "wurde am 27. Mai 1794 zu Neu-Haldensleben geboren. wo sein Vater ein beschäftigter Arzt war. Bereits mit 17 Jahren bezog er 1811 die Universität Berlin, wo er 1814 promovirte und dann alsbald im Hauptfeldlazareth des preußischen Gardecorps den zweiten und letzten Feldzug gegen Napoleon mitmachte. Er kam 1815 aus Paris zurück, um später nach Wien zu gehen und dort unter Beer und Jager Augenheilkunde zu studiren. Nach Vollendung seiner Studien liess er sich im Jahre 1817 als Arzt in Magdeburg nieder, wo er an der damals noch bestehenden chirurgischen Lehranstalt Vorträge über allgemeine Pathologie und Therapie und mit besonderem Erfolg über Augenheilkunde hielt. Seine praktische, sowie seine wissenschaftliche Thätigkeit gestalteten sich hier in kurzer Zeit zu einer ungemein vortheilhaften und die Anerkennung derselben liess auch nicht allzulange auf sich warten; er wurde zum königlichen Regierungs-Medicinalrath ernannt, wurde Director der medicinischen Oberexaminations-Commission und dergleichen. - Er starb am 7. März 1867. Seine wissenschaftliche Thätigkeit war vornehmlich der Augenheilkunde gewidmet, er nahm in diesem Zweig der Medicin unbedingt eine hervorragende Stellung ein, sowohl als Praktiker wie als Schriftsteller. Sein "Grundriss der gesammten Augenheilkunde" (Magdeburg 1834) war ein Werk, welches bestimmt mit zu den besten Lehrbüchern der vorophthalmoskopischen Periode der Ophthalmologie gehörte. Es zerfiel in zwei Theile, in: "Grundriss der allgemeinen Augenheilkunde" und "Grundriss der speciellen Augenheilkunde", von denen das erste im Jahre 1840 in der dritten, das letztere in der zweiten Auflage erschien. Von ganz besonderem Werthe sind aber seine historisch-ophthalmologischen Arbeiten, nämlich: "Zur älteren Geschichte der Augenheilkunde". Programm der medicinisch-chirurgischen Lehranstalt zu Magdeburg 1841, und "Die Augenheilkunde des Hippokrates" (Magdeburg 1843). Besonders das letztere, neun Bogen Starke Werk ist eine ganz vorzügliche historisch-augenärztliche Arbeit und sichert seinem Verfasser einen hervorragenden Platz in der Reihe der medicinischen Historiker. Es ist für das Studium der antiken Oculistik fast unentbehrlich und wird seinen Werth immer behalten, da es unter genauester Benützung der der Quellen und der einschlägigen Literatur gearbeitet ist.
